The most volume for the money
Lambswool
- What it gives you
- Most warmth per dollar
- What it costs you
- You will feel it, and it will pill
Woollen-spun lambswool at five gauge gives volume without the weight of a four-ply worsted. It is a lighter garment than it looks.
Airy also means draughty at the cuff. The cuffs are ribbed long, 9 cm, for that reason.
Four rows, on every wool piece we sell
What this yarn will do that you did not ask for.
A piece with any of these four rows missing cannot be listed. That rule is enforced in the build, not left to whoever writes the copy.
- Will it pill?Pilling
- It will pill, and sooner than merino. The loose fibre halo that makes lambswool feel warm is exactly what tangles. We grade it 3 after 2,000 rubs (Martindale, ISO 12945-2). Expect to comb it after the first month of regular wear.
- Will it itch?Itch
- Mean fibre diameter 24 μm. Above roughly 23 μm most people can feel wool on bare skin. If you are sensitive on the neck, the merino or cashmere lines will suit you better than this one.
- What if I wash it wrong?Felting
- Lambswool felts readily. Wool cycle, 30 °C maximum, dried flat, and do not rub it while it is wet. Felting shrinkage is permanent and is not covered as a defect.
- Will moths eat it?Moths
- A protein fibre, so moths eat it. Wash before storing, seal it, keep it ventilated between seasons, and do not leave it compressed in a stack all summer.

The conditions, not the icons.
Wool cycle, 30 °C, dry flat. Allow 36 hours to dry.
washing it hotter than this is not covered — and here is exactly why
Who pays when a sweater is felted- Maximum wash temperature
- 30 °CAbove this the fibre felts, and felting is permanent.
- Machine wool cycle
- AllowedA true wool programme: low agitation, slow spin.
- Drying
- Dry flatHanging a wet shaped knit stretches the body and the shoulders.
- Tumble dryer
- NeverHeat plus tumbling is the fastest way to felt a wool garment.
- Iron
- 110 °C maximumPress and lift. Sliding an iron across knitting flattens the stitch.
