Structure instead of stretch

Cotton

What it gives you
Machine washable, no felting, no moths
What it costs you
Barely warmer than a shirt
Compare it against the other yarns

Cotton does not spring back the way wool does, so a cotton rib relies on the fold of the structure rather than the memory of the fibre. It pulls in less and relaxes more.

There is no elastane in it. When it relaxes, a cold wash brings most of it back.

No animal fibre in this piece

Three of the four wool problems do not apply here.

  • Pilling

It still abrades. We grade this yarn 4 on the same test — Martindale abrasion, 2,000 rubs, assessed to ISO 12945-2. Cotton flattens and goes limp at the cuffs rather than balling up.

  • Itch

No animal fibre, so no micron value and nothing to prickle.

  • Felting

Plant fibre does not felt. Machine wash at 40 °C without worrying about it.

  • Moths

Clothes moths eat protein fibre. They have no interest in this.

Care

The conditions, not the icons.

Machine wash 40 °C, dry flat. Reshape while damp.

washing it hotter than this is not covered — and here is exactly why

Who pays when a sweater is felted
Maximum wash temperature
40 °CAbove this the fibre felts, and felting is permanent.
Machine wool cycle
Not allowedWash it by hand in still water instead.
Drying
Dry flatHanging a wet shaped knit stretches the body and the shoulders.
Tumble dryer
NeverHeat plus tumbling is the fastest way to felt a wool garment.
Iron
150 °C maximumPress and lift. Sliding an iron across knitting flattens the stitch.
Care symbols: wool cycle at 30 degrees, do not tumble dry, dry flat, iron at 110 degrees maximum
