Warmer than its weight, and it sheds

Alpaca blend

What it gives you
Warm out of proportion to its weight
What it costs you
Sheds, mats, and you will feel the guard hairs
Compare it against the other yarns

Alpaca is hollow-cored, so it insulates out of proportion to how much it weighs, and it drapes rather than springs.

It sheds fibre for the first several wears. On dark trousers you will see it. At 25 μm you will also feel the guard hairs on bare skin.

Four rows, on every wool piece we sell

What this yarn will do that you did not ask for.

A piece with any of these four rows missing cannot be listed. That rule is enforced in the build, not left to whoever writes the copy.

Will it pill?Pilling
The long halo mats and pills wherever a strap or a seatbelt rubs. We grade this yarn 2–3 after 2,000 rubs (Martindale, ISO 12945-2). It also sheds loose fibre for the first several wears.
Will it itch?Itch
Mean fibre diameter 25 μm. Above roughly 23 μm most people feel wool on bare skin, and alpaca guard hairs are stiffer than merino at the same diameter. Assume you will feel this one.
What if I wash it wrong?Felting
Heat and agitation felt wool, and felting cannot be undone. Wool cycle, 30 °C maximum, dried flat. A 60 °C machine wash will shrink this permanently, and that is wear caused by washing, not a defect in the garment.
Will moths eat it?Moths
Wool is a protein fibre and clothes moths eat it. Store it clean — moths are drawn to skin oils and food traces, not to wool itself — sealed in a bag or box, off the floor, and never pressed flat under weight for a whole season.

Pilling grade

2–3

5 is unchanged, 1 is heavily pilled.

Test method

Martindale abrasion, 2,000 rubs, assessed to ISO 12945-2

Mean fibre diameter 25 μm. Where that sits against every other yarn.

Care

The conditions, not the icons.

Hand wash, 30 °C, dry flat. Expect shedding early on.

washing it hotter than this is not covered — and here is exactly why

Who pays when a sweater is felted
Maximum wash temperature
30 °CHand wash only. A machine will agitate this into felt.
Machine wool cycle
Not allowedWash it by hand in still water instead.
Drying
Dry flatHanging a wet shaped knit stretches the body and the shoulders.
Tumble dryer
NeverHeat plus tumbling is the fastest way to felt a wool garment.
Iron
110 °C maximumPress and lift. Sliding an iron across knitting flattens the stitch.
Care symbols: wool cycle at 30 degrees, do not tumble dry, dry flat, iron at 110 degrees maximum
